The World's Rarest Insects

Updated: Dec 20, 2021

Just when you thought nature couldn't get more weirder, you find out there are a variety of strange and rare insects and also a million ones yet to be discovered; And of those that have been found, there are thousands of them on the verge of going extinct.

Check out the world's rarest insects below-these certainly aren't your common household pests!

5. Euspinolia militaris (The Panda Ant)

Yes, there is such a thing called the Panda Ant, referred due to its coloration- with white and black spots covering all of its body. These weird insects belong to the Mutilidae family or simply the Wasp family, and are not actual ants as their name says.

These insects native to Chile, look like cute little panda bugs, but their sting is so fierce and strong that it can kill a two-pound mammal in just six stings!

4.Atrax sutherlandi ( The Red-Fanged Funnel Spider)

The 'vampire spider', so they call it. The atrax sutherlandi, a very rare spider, calls Oz home. The funnel spider gets its name from the types of web it weaves. This species of spider has blood-red fangs, possibly due to some mutations; and spins funnel-like webs out of its silk, which are used as traps for the spider's prey.

But don't be alarmed- the vampire spiders ain't gonna suck your blood; typically they feed on other insects.

3.Lycaedes melissa samuelis

( The Karner Butterfly)

Originally from Karner, New York, these species of butterflies have nearly got extinct due to deforestation. The Karner blue butterfly can only be found in the northeast parts of USA.

These one-inch insects have a very specific way of living- their life cycle depends on the wild blue lupine flowers, found only in the ranges of New York and New Hampshire, which explains why they have a certain habitat only.

2.Titanus giganteus ( The Titan Beetle)

This creepy crawler calls South America home. The Titan beetle is a Neotropical longhorn beetle ( species of beetles having long antennae) and just one of these enormous beetles averages about six to nine inches long, making it the largest beetle ever known to Earth!

Most commonly found in the Amazon rainforest, these Titan beetles have jaws strong enough to break into human flesh. So, don't ever mess with the Titan!

The rarest insect in the world:

1.Dryococelus australis ( The Tree Lobster)

This giant walking stick lives on Lord Howe Island, which can be found between New Zealand and Australia. Scientists believed this insect to be extinct in the 1920s. However, a very small group of these six inch bugs were surprisingly rediscovered in 2001.

The Lord Howe Insect, as big as a human hand lives on 1,844 feet high spindle of rock in the middle of Ball's Pyramid (a part of the Island).

These insects are so rare that scientists are trying to breed more than 9,000 species of this specific bug.
